Background of the study

Online linguistic innovation is prominently visible in the realm of digital memes, particularly on Instagram where visual and textual elements merge to create novel forms of communication. In Nigeria, Instagram memes have become a popular medium for expressing cultural humor, social commentary, and identity. These memes often involve creative wordplay, puns, and altered grammatical structures that reflect the fluidity of digital language (Uche, 2023). The integration of image and text allows for innovative linguistic constructions that challenge conventional language norms and offer new ways of encoding meaning. This study conducts a comparative analysis of linguistic innovation in Instagram memes to explore how these creative expressions contribute to broader language evolution in digital contexts. By examining the features of meme language—such as neologisms, syntactic alterations, and semantic shifts—the research seeks to understand the impact of visual narratives on linguistic creativity and cultural expression (Adebayo, 2024). The study aims to reveal the dynamic interplay between technology, humor, and language innovation in Nigerian social media, offering insights into how digital communication fosters ongoing linguistic change.

Statement of the problem

Although Instagram memes are widely recognized for their creative impact on language, there is limited systematic research on how they drive linguistic innovation in Nigeria. Existing studies often focus on the visual aspects of memes, neglecting the complex linguistic transformations embedded in their textual components. This gap in the literature hinders a full understanding of how online linguistic innovation emerges through meme culture. Without a comparative analysis that addresses both form and function, educators and linguists are left without robust models for interpreting these digital language trends (Ibrahim, 2023). This study aims to address these limitations by providing an in-depth comparative analysis of linguistic innovation as manifested in Nigerian Instagram memes.

Objectives of the study

1. To analyze linguistic innovations present in Nigerian Instagram memes.

2. To compare these innovations with traditional language practices.

3. To develop theoretical insights into digital language change.

Research questions

1. What linguistic innovations are evident in Instagram memes?

2. How do these innovations differ from traditional language forms?

3. What factors drive these creative transformations?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it examines online linguistic innovation through the lens of Instagram memes in Nigerian digital culture. By highlighting how memes foster creative language change, the research contributes to sociolinguistic theory and informs educational practices in digital literacy. The findings provide valuable insights for media analysts, educators, and policymakers in understanding and adapting to the rapid evolution of language in online spaces (Chinwe, 2024; Obi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing Instagram memes by Nigerian users, excluding other social media platforms and offline linguistic practices.

Definitions of terms

• Linguistic Innovation: The creation of new language forms and expressions.

• Instagram Memes: Visual and textual content shared on Instagram that conveys humor and cultural commentary.

• Comparative Analysis: A method for examining similarities and differences between linguistic phenomena.
